A Fair pavilion redesigned to become the ice rink for Milano-Cortina Olympic Games

The use of CFD has been fundamental for precise analysis of the particular design of the pavilion giving more accurate results than codes and traditional wind tunnel simulations.

ON A NORMATIVE LEVEL WE DIDN’T FIND MUCH REASSURANCE, SO WE ASKED OURSELVES WHETHER THERE COULD BE AN ALTERNATIVE SYSTEM TO THE WIND TUNNEL.
THEY ASKED US TO PERFORM WORK ON THE CIRCLED PAVILION BY REMOVING 12 OF THE EXISTING 20 PILLARS.
WE THEN REFINED THE DISCUSSION BY CONSIDERING THE PAVILION WITH ITS ACTUAL GEOMETRY, WHICH IS A PARTICULAR GEOMETRY BECAUSE, FIRST OF ALL, IT HAS AN UNUSUAL SIZE, AND THEN IT FEATURES LARGE OVERHANGS ON THE SIDES.
EXACTLY, WITH PRECISION — UNDERSTANDING THE WIND ACTIONS, ESPECIALLY THE UPLIFT FORCES CAUSED BY THE WIND, WAS ALSO CRUCIAL IN TERMS OF ECONOMIC SAVINGS.
FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS WERE CARRIED OUT, ALTERNATELY CONSIDERING DOORS OPEN AND DOORS CLOSED, IN ORDER TO MAXIMIZE THE EFFECTS, ESPECIALLY INTERNAL DEPRESSURIZATION.
IN 2–3 DAYS, WHICH WERE PRECISELY THE TIMEFRAMES ON SITE, WE WERE ABLE TO GET AN UPDATE.
THEY ARE BETTER AND MORE INTERESTING ANSWERS THAN THE NOMATIVES AND MORE EXHAUSTIVE
THE AERODYNAMIC WIND FLOW ANALYSIS ALLOWED US TO GREATLY REDUCE THE EFFECT OF THE WIND, BRINGING US CLOSER TO THE ACTUAL REALITY OF THE SITUATION.
THE OUTCOME OF THE WIND ANALYSIS CARRIED OUT USING SOFTWARE RESULTED IN VALUES THAT WERE LOWER THAN THOSE PRESCRIBED BY THE REGULATIONS. HOW DOES THAT HOLD UP IN TERMS OF VERIFICATION BY THE CERTIFYING BODY, GIVEN THAT THE REGULATORY VALUES WERE NOT USED? THIS ASPECT IS ACCOUNTED FOR IN THE REGULATIONS.
FLUID DYNAMICS ANALYSIS IS CERTAINLY RELIABLE BECAUSE IT HAS A STRONG TRACK RECORD, ESPECIALLY IN THE AERONAUTICAL AND AUTOMOTIVE FIELDS.
